Piano Phasing Music

October 20, 2014

More process music inspired by Steve Reich.

Two part exploration of sounds that come out of phasing a C Major scale. In the first part the two pianos are playing at different tempos, as in Reich’s “Piano Phase”, but in the second part they are playing in different meters, which gives a similar but not identical sound to Reich’s “Clapping Music”. It’s techincally more similar to phasing music written by Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew, such as certain parts of “Frame by Frame”, recorded by King Crimson.

Lots of fun sounds letting themselves be heard here. I haven’t decided what kind of experiment to do for next week yet. I’m thinking maybe a take on Terry Riley’s “In C”?

Clapping Music/Tape Music hybrid

October 13, 2014

This is a process music composition inspired by Steve Reich. It’s based on a clapping pattern similar to his “Clapping Music”, but manipulated more in the style of tape music, for example, Reich’s “It’s Gonna Rain”. Editing the loops digitally gives the benefit of being able to loop video at the same time, but has the downside of missing a lot of the cooler sounds that would have come out with the imperfections of tape.

Relatively successful experiment, I suppose.

I’m thinking about uploading a minimalist music experiment every Monday. I already shot and edited the one for next week. :)

Disappear (old Porcupine Tree cover)

October 6, 2014

Another old recording from January 2011. This one is an old Porcupine Tree b-side that has somehow stuck with me. Acoustic guitar vs. dobro guitar. :)

Jegus, I used to have so much hair.

Give me some more song requests and subscribe to me on YouTube!

Coffee youtube

October 5, 2014

Thinking about starting a new youtube channel where I do nothing but make coffee on camera. Channel name “walkermakescoffee”.

Thinking about making pro intro with short music. 4×4 trash bass drum and bass guitar plays A A A A C C C C A A A A C C C C. Halfway through second bass guitar cones in an octave up. Four copies of me clapping on the two, the and of three, and on four. Second measure on two, and the ands of three and four. Third and fourth same as second and third.

That’s what I’m imagining.

Tomorrow I want to make a pot of chemex and boost it with a serving of aeropress. I want to film the whole thing and basically prepare both simultaneously. Then I’ll sit down and talk about how it tastes. It might be a while before it gets updated though because I want to make the intro and start a new channel etc.

Could also start new channels walkermakesstuff and walkerplaysmusic.

Anyway.
